Open Air Library In An Abandoned Industrial Landscape

Magdeburg, Germany, is the place where you can visit and admire the Open Air Library. With a budget of $325,000 Euros, the library was built on a surface of 488 square meters. The project started in2005, when residents of an abandoned district centre in East Germany used crates to build a district library and donated books filled the shelves of the former district library’s site. KARO Architekten were commissioned to build the modern Open Air Library we can see today. The abandoned industrial landscape was adorned with a fantastic urban experiment in the shape of a modern library, constructed from pieces of the modernist facade of the old HORTEN warehouse of the City of Hamm, built back in 1966. With no need for registration, the public library gathers readers in a contemporary outdoor setting. Readers can take books and bring them back or bring other ones in exchange, so that everyone can enjoy this open place and the knowledge it brings. Open 24 hours a day, the Open Air Library is also used for public readings, local band concerts and other cultural events. The elementary school uses the library for theater plays and every community member can take part in this cultural experiment.

In 2009, Electroboutique installed an airport flight departure kiosk in the middle of a forest. Their reasoning, and best use of the word “ferroconcrete” you’ll read today: “We are facing a choice: whether we should further sink our ferroconcrete teeth of architecture and transport system into the nature’s body; or should we try to minimize our impact on it”.

Film students, present and past, please enjoy this sketch written by me and Dan Gurewitch.

A favorite sketch written by two of my favorite sketch written-ers ever.

This is really amazing… and frighteningly accurate.

Here’s a video I directed poking fun at Film School and all the silly things we used to do. It was written by Emily and Dan, produced by Creighton, edited by Nick, VO by Kelly, and shot by Carl.

This was super fun to direct because I got to throw in a lot of homages to films my friends and I made. For instance the titles: “If Nick” and “Sorrowful Repentance” are two titles of shorts I made in college (I know). The title “Friday Night Riot” is a throw back to the public access show my friends and I had in high school called, “Tuesday Night Riot.” The shots in the, “Life In The Key Of A-Minor” are all similar to a couple of movies I made in high school and my good friend Bryan made Freshman year of college. Also Bryan makes a guest appearance as Bertrand Peffercorn.

And my favorite homage is the title, “Miles Apart”, which is a reference to a student film my friend Travis directed in college. The film starred a young Josh Ruben and Sam Reich who, at the time, I didn’t know and now I work with. Enjoy it and Reblog it!

How did they not cover “Chasing a guy carrying a briefcase (preferably through a parking garage or dorm building)”?

I wish I could go to RIT screenings again. I LOVE BAD STUDENT FILMS.

Last night I participated in the first annual Embarrassing Film Festival. It was a small gathering of friends where we all contributed some of the worst acting scenes from our careers. It was stuff that before the event we’d wished could somehow vanish from the time space continuum… and yet, by celebrating them, it turned out to be an extremely cathartic experience… and hilarious. I took home a trifecta of awards! Most Uncomfortable, Worst Use of A Prop, and Worst Special Effect (which, admittingly, I contributed little to, but I’ll take it). I’m already digging through my collection for next year. (Taken with instagram)

The Lions Mane Jellyfish is the largest jellyfish in the world. They have been swimming in arctic waters since before the dinosaurs (over 650 million years ago) and are among some of the oldest surviving species in the world.

The largest can come in at about 6 meters and has tentacles over 50 meters long. Pretty amazing when you think these things have been swimming around for so long.

They have hundreds of poisonous tentacles that it used to catch passing by fish. it then slowly drags in it’s prey and eats it.

That is terrifying.
