Swedish word/expression/phrase of the day: Olycksfågel
Fågel means bird.
Olycka means misery, accident, being unfortunate.
Being a little “accident bird” is just a sweet way of saying that someone is really clumsy and attracts accidents or is kind of prone to injury. My mum calls me her little olycksfågel, because I somehow always get involved in really bizarre, mostly household-based, accidents. The ones that are so advanced, so calculated that no one ever believes that they happen randomly and in two seconds.
As a teen, when I saw Final Destination (by the way - that series of films must die a silent, lack of funds-related death asap please) in the cinema, I was freaked out because I was utterly convinced I was headed for something like that.
It’s a funny word anyway. If you say Ooleexfougel you’re pretty close to pronouncing it correctly!
Two things:
1.) Astrid, great recording earlier. You know, that’s the first time I’ve heard your speaking voice. Lovely. I’m sure you’ve done others, but I must have missed them. I’ve only ever heard your singing voice.
2.) In Swedish, Fågel is bird, and in German, Vogel is bird. Pronounced similarly, no? Ah language!
