Do you enjoy making friends on things like Twitter and Tumblr? I know I do, but some people find it impersonal and pointless.
Yes, I do. And to be honest, I really don’t get this notion that it’s impersonal. Behind (almost) every twitter account, tumblelog, and blog there is a person. A real, thinking, feeling *person*.
When my mom was a kid, she would spend her allowance on pen pal lists that were advertised in the backs of comic books. She had dozens of pen pals located all around the country and the world. She cherished them… learned from them… kept in contact with many for years… she even tried to find some recently in the digital age.
What’s so strange about wanting to connect with people… whether digitally or not? I mean, the internet certainly isn’t the end of in-person socializing.
So yeah, I very much enjoy getting to know people online. And there are many who I genuinely miss when they’re less active.
