For #TumblrTuesday the amount of awesome stuff that The Blaaahg brings me daily is out of control. They have their eyes on all aspects of art, music, film, design, culture, skateboarding, fashion and more and it’s presence in Richmond and New York. Definitely worth the follow, although the occasional post may be NSFW, it typically doesn’t come through the dashboard. Plus they brought me all this Beiruty goodness.
So over the weekend, I listend to a lot of Beirut. I love the band, and have been fortunate enough to have seen them live in the middle of summer in the middle of Central Park in the middle of a full moon. I had also heard that they do certain things to certain people, but..
Doing some interneting on their most recent album, March of the Zapotec & Realpeople - Holland, we found some goodies for ya…
Back in 2001 and before forming Beirut, Zach Condon was part of an band called The Real People (not to be confused with the UK band from the eighties). Like a lot of artists in their early bands, the music is heavily electronic and sort of lo-fi. All of this sounds fantastic however, when paired up with Zach’s unbelievable crooning. His mellow delivery just cuts through the synth lines and sits happily out on top. The other amazing thing about this band if he is something like 21 now, he would have been very very young when all this was recorded (try 15). We can’t help but draw instant Ian Curtis comparisons, but can you blame us? Young kid with an incredible voice, deadpan delivery, electronic sounding rock band, lo-fi demos.. get our drift? Anyways, here are 5 tracks that Zach came out with when his ass was a todler

Considered one of the greatest Australian songs of all time, this Go-Betweens track is an all time favorite. The songwriting duo of Robert Forster and Grant McLennan had a long and varied run from the late 70’s until McLennan’s death a few years ago, but 1983’s Before Hollywood is our favorite by far.
Go-Betweens - Cattle And Cane (DOWNLOAD)
Flying Nun alumni The Verlaines were a staple of New Zealand weird-pop from the early 80’s until, well, fuckin’ now actually. Quirky, jangly and catchy as all get-out, this track is a classic. Rock on bitches!
The Verlaines – Death And The Maiden (DOWNLOAD)And finally, to end this Sunday evening…
Montreal’s Mark Sultan has been recording a filthy brand of 50’s & 60’s inspired garage punk for over a decade under a million different names – from the Spaceshits to Les Sexareenos to the amazing King Khan and the BBQ Show and his one-man moniker BBQ. Recently he recorded this single under his own name that’s been on my list of favorites, nobody really pulls off doo-wop like this (or even taps that sound for inspiration). Stoked to see how this full-length turns out.
